With a postgraduate in Communications, Monica initially worked in Public Relations which took her to Australia in search of a more creative way of working. Here she met the artist Alison Coates and gradually filled her weeks with flowers and pods rather than press releases and media lists honing and refining her eye for shape and colour and learning about simplicity and balance.

Returning to Scotland in 1999, Monica found the perfect site for her busy flower shop in leafy Marchmont and had eleven years of wonderful collaborations with her customers who returned year after year for the treats they found there. Gently scented polyanthus bunches – the first of the spring, lily of the valley, peppery wallflowers,  glorious bunches of garden roses, scabious, cornflower, sweet William and prize winning sweet peas to herald in the summer  – not to mention the grasses, pods, foliage and herbs along with the exotic and desert-like flowers she sourced  from her suppliers.

Commissions for the National Galleries of Scotland, The Royal Botanical Gardens of Edinburgh, The Edinburgh International Book Festival, corporate events for Goldman Sachs, Scottish Life and weddings at some of Scotland’s most beautiful country houses and castles followed.

Her previous work includes designing and decorating the launch party of the Patron’s Scheme for the Royal Botanical Gardens of Edinburgh, embellishing The National Gallery of Scotland for Patron’s Dinners, floral installations for The Edinburgh International Book Festival, corporate events for Goldman Sachs, Scottish Life, Walter Scott and Partners and wedding flowers in Scotland’s most romantic country houses and castles.

Monica is now concentrating on occasions’ flowers, growing and arranging these from her Edinburgh studio and garden. With the demise of the market grower and a nostalgia for garden flowers and grasses unavailable commercially, she closed the doors of her eleven year old flower shop to grow more of her favourite flowers, herbs and foliage to use in her work and a few vegetables to boot. Here she is nurturing scented roses and perennials to augment her other materials.  To be able to pluck flowers from the herbaceous border whilst continuing to source from her long-time suppliers allows for a wonderful palate of possibilities to create the most beautiful of flower work.
